What is a lift index and how do you use it to measure campaigns?
Lift Index is a key metric used in direct mail and other marketing campaigns to measure the effectiveness of targeting. It shows how much more likely a targeted segment is to respond to a campaign compared to a random (control) group or the overall average.
Lift Index
Response Rate
of Control Group
(or Overall Population)
Response Rate
of Targeted Group
Lift Index > 1:
The targeted group responded better than the control group, indicating successful targeting.
Lift Index = 1:
The targeted group responded the same as the control group, showing no added value from the targeting strategy.
Lift Index < 1:
The targeted group responded worse than the control group, suggesting poor targeting or ineffective messaging.
